Motus vivendi, 2001

Video still of 1-channel video projection, stereo, 28'50'' (loop)

The starting point for this work is my long-standing engagement with Aikido, a Japanese martial art. With the help of a video camera I have studied several Aikidokas training together. This resulted in images generated in slow-motion and in extreme close-up showing the movements and meetings of arms, hands and feet as well as the interplay between black and white garments. A dancing sequence of images was put together from the filmed material, working with repetition and making the images appear almost abstract.

For these pictures, I have «composed» a music based on my own brain activity. After the image montage, I looked at the finished film while at the same time measuring my brain wave activity. The brain waves (EEG) were then transformed into sound through a special technical procedure, which normally is used in a therapeutic context (psychophony).
